Surface level confronts the uncomfortable truth that change often starts with complete erasure. The artwork uses a photograph of the artist herself, but leaves a blank reflection symbolizing emptiness. It talks about the moment when the old self, all its identities, defenses, habits, narratives etc. have to be stripped away because they are no longer good for us. It can often leave us feeling blank and scared, but only after that blankness can something good be rebuilt, layer by layer.
